Marist’s Jarosz signed by WNBA’s Dallas Wings

But before long, the former Marist College basketball star received some good news: She was invited to attend preseason training camp with the Dallas Wings of the WNBA.

“I’m humbled and honored to be invited to the Dallas Wings’ preseason training camp,” Jarosz said in a statement. “I’m really looking forward to working hard, having fun and making the most of this amazing opportunity.”

Though some mock drafts predicted the 6-foot-3 center would be drafted in the third round, Jarosz said last week that “nothing is guaranteed” and, if she wasn’t drafted, she hoped to sign as a free agent and contend for a roster spot in the preseason. So Plan B is in the works as WNBA training camps open next Sunday and the preseason begins April 29.

Jarosz, as a sixth-year senior, set career highs averaging 18.9 points, 11.9 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game, leading the Red Foxes to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference semifinals. She also was named conference Player of the Year. She was invited to a scouting combine in Indianapolis earlier this month and later participated in private workouts for WNBA coaches and scouts.

“I did a decent job of extending my range and facing the basket, instead of being limited to posting up,” the 23-year-old said of her improvements last season. “Adding those skills and being able to do different things makes me more of a threat offensively.”

Jarosz becomes the third former Marist women’s basketball player to be invited to WNBA training camp, joining Fifi Camara in 2006 and Rachele Fitz in 2011.

The Wings, formerly the Tulsa Shock, are based in Arlington, Texas. The franchise relocated from Oklahoma after last season. The team, led by star point guard Skylar Diggins, lost in the West Conference semifinals last year.

“To see a kid who only played 15 minutes her freshman year (at Vanderbilt) have the kind of year she did this year, to now being a potential pro is incredible,” Marist coachBrian Giorgis said of Jarosz. “It shows the kind of work she’s put in. She’s gotten her body in the type of condition where I think injuries are a thing of the past. The sky is the limit for her.”
